Tips For Packing Clothes For Assisted Living

If you are packing clothes for your loved one to take to an assisted living facility, you might find that he or she has more clothes than can easily fit in his or her living space at the assisted living facility. You might be worried that you will not pack the appropriate clothing for your loved one and will end up making him or her uncomfortable because he or she does not have the clothes that he or she needs. Here are some tips for packing clothes for an assisted living facility.

1. Go With Comfort Above All Else

When choosing which clothes to pack for your loved one, you are going to want to focus mostly on comfort. The best place to start is with your loved one's favorite outfits. If your loved one wore a few outfits a lot, then chances are good that these clothes are made out of a fabric that is comfortable on his or her skin. Try to pack as many outfits that are made in this same fabric as possible. Doing so will help ensure that you do not irritate your loved one's skin.

Also choose clothes that have elastic waistbands and are not tight.

2. Find Clothes That Are Easy to Take On and Off

Next, you are going to want to choose clothes that are very easy to take on and off. This is because your relative will not have full support when bathing or going to the bathroom and will likely want to complete these tasks him or herself. In order to make sure that your loved one is able to maintain his or her pride, you want to give him or her the needed tools. Clothing that has Velcro and elastic waistbands are easier to fasten than clothing that has small buttons, tight zippers, or snaps that require a lot of pressure to close.

3. Pack for a Variety of Temperatures

Because elderly people are often cold, the assisted living facility might be kept very warm. However, your loved one might want to go outside for a walk or take a trip with other residents. You want to make sure that you pack clothing that can be used for a variety of temperatures or layered so that your loved one can be comfortable in any temperature. Sweaters that layer over thinner shirts and vests are great options.
