2 Signs That It Is Time For Assisted Living

Determining that your loved one is ready for assisted living care can be a very hard decision. Many people don't know when it is time to take that next step. In addition, you might be worried that your loved one won't receive it well and feel betrayed. This is why timing is everything. It is important the before you pressure your loved one into an assisted living facility that you know it is the right time. Here are a couple signs that it is time.

1. Your Loved One's Personal Hygiene Is Bad

When you visit your loved one do you notice that they have an unpleasant body odor? If so, it might be time for assisted living. As the person ages they might have a hard time bathing themselves, doing the laundry, and caring for their own day-to-day needs.

It may be hard for them to admit to themselves that they are not able to care for their own hygiene, so you may have to ask some hard questions. For instance, you should ask how often they do laundry, when they take showers, if any of those tasks are getting harder etc. Recognize that they may be forgetting to do these things, just as much as losing the ability to do them.

2. The Kitchen of Your Loved One Is In Shambles

An important part of living on your own is preparing meals. If you notice the kitchen is dirty, that there is old rotting food, or that there are a lot of TV dinners in the freezer, it may be a sign that they are ready for assisted living. Without being able to prepare meals and keep their kitchen safe and clean, it could cause disease and be dangerous. For this reason, look at the state of the kitchen.

3. Your Loved One's Health Is Deteriorating

Pay close attention to your loved one's health. Have their lost or gained a good deal of weight lately? Do they seem to be forgetting things more? Are they complaining about pain? Are they mental and physically capable to take their medications? All of these things are signs that they are not healthy enough to care for themselves anymore. This is why it is very important that for their safety you get them help before the problem becomes too bad.

By looking for these signs you can know that it is the right time for assisted living.
